Maths at Stanton Road: Creating Confident Mathematicians
At Stanton Road Primary School, we believe that maths is an essential skill for everyday life. Our goal is to ensure that every single child becomes a confident, capable mathematician who not only understands numbers but actually enjoys working with them!
We know that the best way to help our children succeed is by working in close partnership with you. Together, we can build a strong mathematical foundation that will empower your child to think logically, solve problems, and tackle challenges with real confidence.
🧠 The “Mastery” Approach
We use a highly successful approach called “Teaching for Mastery,” supported by the brilliant Power Maths programme. This simply means we believe everyone can do maths! Rather than rushing through topics, we take careful, small steps together as a class. We make sure every child has a secure, deep understanding of a concept before moving on, ensuring no one gets left behind.
🧮 How We Teach: Hands, Pictures, Numbers
To make maths come alive and truly make sense, we use a three-step method across the school:
- Step 1: Concrete (Hands-on): Children first use physical objects (like blocks, counters, or beads) to build and ‘feel’ the maths.
- Step 2: Pictorial (Pictures): Next, they draw visual representations or diagrams to help them ‘see’ the problem.
- Step 3: Abstract (Numbers): Finally, once they are totally confident, they smoothly transition to using traditional numbers and mathematical symbols.
⏱️ Fluency & Number Power
A huge part of feeling confident in maths is being able to recall basic facts quickly and accurately, without having to overthink them.
- Daily Fluency: Alongside our main maths lessons, we run quick, daily fluency sessions to help children practice key skills and keep their memories sharp.
- Mastering Number: In Foundation 2, Key Stage 1, Year 4, and Year 5, we run a fantastic, nationally recognised “Mastering Number” programme. This gives children rock-solid confidence with essential building blocks—especially their times tables!
🏠 Working in Partnership: How you can help at home
You don’t need to be a maths expert to support your child at home! Your encouragement makes the biggest difference in the world.
- Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS): For our older children, logging into TTRS for just a few minutes a day is a highly engaging, fun way to master those all-important times tables.
- Everyday Maths: Talk about maths in the real world! Whether you are baking (measuring ingredients), shopping (calculating change), or looking at a bus timetable, showing your child that maths is everywhere helps them see its value.
- Keep it Positive: If you found maths tricky when you were at school, try to keep it a secret! Positivity is contagious. Let’s work together to celebrate their mistakes as wonderful opportunities to learn and grow.
