Our Commitment to the Protected Characteristics: Achieving Excellence Together

At Stanton Road Primary School, we believe education has the power to change the world. To achieve this excellence, we are deeply committed to fostering a fully inclusive environment. We actively celebrate diversity and ensure that every member of our school community is valued, respected, and treated with dignity.

The Protected Characteristics

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment, and victimisation. It is against the law to discriminate against anyone because of:

  • Age
  • Gender reassignment
  • Being married or in a civil partnership
  • Being pregnant or on maternity leave
  • Disability
  • Race (including colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin)
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual orientation

These are called the Protected Characteristics. At Stanton Road, no form of discrimination is tolerated. We expect our whole school community to show unwavering respect for all people, including those who share these protected characteristics.

Rooted in Our Core Values

We actively promote the Protected Characteristics in our curriculum and work to embed them deeply within our school ethos, guided by our four core values:

 

  • Citizenship: We unite in shared community beliefs while recognizing, protecting, and celebrating the unique identities and backgrounds of all people. We teach our children to be caring, responsible members of a diverse society.
  • Expression: We give everyone the confidence to ask questions, be curious, and communicate their authentic selves. We value every voice and treat all humans with dignity.
  • Collaboration: We understand that working together and learning from people with diverse perspectives and life experiences makes our community stronger.
  • Inspiration: We raise aspirations and empower all our children to go out and change the world, ensuring no child’s potential is limited by prejudice or stereotypes.

How We Promote Equality in School

The 9 Protected Characteristics are actively promoted and explored at Stanton Road through:
  • Our school vision statement and core values.
  • Conscious, positive role modelling by all adults in the school community.
  • School assemblies and shared celebrations.
  • PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) and RE (Religious Education) sessions.
  • Meaningful discussions within wider curriculum subjects.
  • STEM activities (e.g., actively challenging gender stereotypes in careers and education).
  • Promoting clear articulation by building appropriate language and a coherent vocabulary of respect.
  • Pupil voice and leadership opportunities.
  • Educational visits and enriching experiences.
  • Extra-curricular activities, including charity work and engagement within the local community.
